An Interview with K&V Homes
Our business is built on personal relationships. From the first meeting to our final walkthrough with a client, it’s our job to get to know our homeowners. What are their likes and dislikes? What communication style works best for them throughout the construction process? Our success is measured in happy customers and positive feedback. Some of our proudest achievements aren’t awards or accolades, but the positive reviews and references from our past clients.
If you want to learn a little more about us, you can check out our history here. Although we care about our customers, we’re flipping the script a little and introducing our owners, Dean and Colin. Here are their candid responses to some of their own likes and dislikes. Hope you enjoy it!
What is your favorite part of the build process?
Dean – Probably getting to know the clients and their families during the process is the best part for me.
Colin – Meeting our clients at the house during the different stages of construction and listening to their admiration of the process and the people that we have working for us to put it all together.
Most unusual request in a custom home?
Dean – Maybe an indoor pool. That’s not too crazy.
Colin – Residential elevator
Favorite trend, whether it’s still current or occurred in the past?
Dean – Personally, I still love the mudroom. It was a much-needed change to homes.
Colin – Agree on the mudroom, as that has become the new entry into and out of the home by all family members.
Do you have a work motto?
Dean – Just roll with the punches. We have to deal with lots of minor issues in the building process, and you really just have to be able to figure it out, fix it and move on.
Colin – Do it right the first time.
If you weren’t doing this, what occupation would you most like to pursue?
Dean – I think something in analytics would be interesting, but I don’t think I could be in an office all day!
Colin – Firefighter/paramedic
What job would you never choose to do?
Dean – Painting
Colin – Drywaller
Favorite pizza topping(s)?
Dean – I’ll eat most anything, but really liking giardiniera on my pizza lately.
Colin – Graziano sausage
How do you ‘unplug’ from work?
Dean – Usually just hanging out with my wife and son. Watching Hawkeye football and basketball and the Cubs. Oh, and golf of course!
Colin – Coaching my daughter’s softball team and working with my son as he progresses with high school baseball. As strange as it sounds, my favorite thing is just relaxing at home with my family when we find that rare time where nothing else is going on. I also golf when I can!
Vacation you’d like to take?
Dean – Anywhere warm during the Iowa winters. In the Summer I think it would be fun to go on a road trip with the family–hitting a couple of baseball games, an amusement/water park, or taking in the sites of a downtown setting.
Colin – My family and I have been going to a major league baseball park every summer so we will be continuing that for years to come. Europe has always been a bucket list destination.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever taken?
Dean – Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Colin – Stand up for what you believe in, no matter what anyone else says.
